Roots on the Rails – America’s Moving Music Festival

1. THE TARAHUMARA TRAIN – September 13-20, 2007  (Tucson<>Mexico’s Copper Canyon)
Tom Russell, Dave Alvin, Butch Hancock, Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum, Terry Allen
We’ve added the amazing Dave Alvin to this powerhouse – making this perhaps the most exciting Texas/California songwriting lineup ever to grace a Roots on the Rails train. We’re getting close to sell-out on this one; yep, it’s pricey (that’s why we’re willing to spread payments over many months), but it’s all-inclusive, it’s not going to get cheaper, and a trip to the Copper Canyons is something everyone ought to do at least once.  (Tucson departure and return).

2. ROOTS ON THE NARROW GAUGE – Sept. 28-Oct. 4, 2007  (Albq<>Durango)
with Fred Eaglesmith & band, Eilen Jewell, Washboard Hank and Lance Loree
This trip through the spectacular San Juan mountains of Northern New Mexico and Southwestern Colorado by narrow-gauge train and private motorcoach has less than a half-dozen spaces remaining. Along with a whole lotta Fred, we’ve added the spectacular Eilen Jewell ( and her band as special guests, along with the irrepressible Washboard Hank and Lance Loree. Several of the shows on the trip (in Silverton, Pagosa Springs and Chama, NM) will not be open to the public – the only way you can attend is by signing up!  (Albuquerque departure & return).
3. THE SCOTTISH FIDDLE TRAIN – November 3-8, 2007  (Vancouver>Toronto)
with Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas and some special guests tbd
This trip is going to be an insane amount of fun. Working with Alasdair has been a blast (I _like_ getting phone calls suggesting that he’s exploring having a group of pipers meet us on the platform in Toronto and lead us through Union Station, kilts a’swirl). I just wish he’d sit down and figure out who his special guests will be – will let you know when he does. Three days and nights on board our own private section of the legendary streamliner The Canadian running through the Rockies, Prairies and North Woods – from Vancouver to Toronto, 3,000 miles on the rails that built a nation! Comfortable sleeper berths, freshly-prepared meals, plus two nights in four-star Fairmont hotels in Vancouver and Toronto, kickoff concert and non-stop entertainment on board.  (Vancouver departure; Toronto arrival).
4. BLACKIE & THE RODEO KINGS TRAIN  – November 9-13, 2007 (Toronto>Vancouver)
Stephen Fearing, Colin Linden and Tom Wilson
with special guests Sass Jordan, Jimmie Rankin and Barney Bentall
Some call them the Kings of Love. We call them one of the most exciting acts ever to come out of the Great White North. Either way, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings rocked the Cowboy Junkies Train across Canada in 2006… And now they’re ready to do it again – this time on their own on one of the great railway journeys in the world.  They’ve just announced their special guests – an amazing lineup of Canadian talent: Sass Jordan, Jimmie Rankin and Barney Bentall. You’ll have to be here.
SASS JORDAN – With her distinctive powerhouse vocals – in the grand tradition of blues-rock divas such as Janis Joplin, Melissa Etheridge and Bonnie Raitt – Sass Jordan has had an enviable career: duets with Joe Cocker on the multiplatinum BODYGUARD soundtrack, platinum albums, tours and appearances with The Rolling Stones,  AC/DC, Aerosmith and Whitesnake, Broadway shows, a full spectrum of life in the world of music. Since 2003, she has been a judge on the ratings blockbuster Canadian Idol.
BARNEY BENTALL is a legendary, well-seasoned performer. Best known as leader of The Legendary Hearts, a hugely successful Canadian act in the 1990’s, Bentall’s latest disc, GIFT HORSE, his first in nine years, shows a mature writer at the peak of his form. With two dozen hits and a handful of gold records under his belt, Barney now performs in a much more intimate and acoustic setting then in the Legendary Hearts hard-rocking heyday, but  it is a setting that suits his music perfectly.l
JIMMY RANKIN – Like any artist worth his salt, Jimmy Rankin knows how to make a lasting impression. Except that, as a man who has won four Songwriter Of The Year Awards for such songs as the chart-topping “Fare Thee Well Love,” “You Feel The Same Way Too,” “Followed Her Around” and “Midnight Angel,” his canvas isn’t restricted to an easel and a few tubes of paint.  It’s an aural canvas framed by experience – and depending on how the Cape Breton native channels his idea –  a brilliantly composed masterstroke of acoustic, roots or rock music depicting life, emotion and observation with resonating finesse. Jimmy was the songwriting lynchpin of The Rankin Family, helping the legendary Canadian family of performers win six Junos and sell over two million albums. Hand Jimmy Rankin a guitar – preferably an acoustic Gibson – and watch him – no, hear him – weave some magic.  (Toronto departure; Vancouver arrival).
